Scream 7

This is my first horror movie review so, welcome. First off, if you know anything at all about me and my personality I’ve carefully curated over my love for horror movies, then you already know how much I adore the Scream franchise. I genuinely think it’s one of the smartest horror series ever made — like yes, it’s about a masked killer making chaotic phone calls, but it’s also this super meta commentary on horror tropes, sequel culture, and how we consume fear as entertainment. And as a certified horror nerd who over-analyzes literally everything, I eat that up every single time.

Okay but can we PLEASE talk about the TV show for a second?? Because the Scream series absolutely existed and I feel like we collectively just… let that happen. It ran for three seasons (yes, three — even if I personally only emotionally invested in the first two), and despite sharing the name, it felt like it was living in a completely different cinematic universe.

And listen — as someone who overanalyzes horror mythology for fun — I was immediately suspicious. The mask wasn’t even the classic Ghostface look we all know and fear. It was darker, more stitched-up, almost urban-legend-core. And the killer’s backstory? A disfigured boy, rejected and beaten by the popular kids, who decides he’s had enough and goes full revenge slasher? I mean… that’s giving 1985 Mask meets Jason Vorhees in a cautionary tale. It felt way more “small-town trauma myth” than sharp, self-aware meta commentary.

While I actually did enjoy it (because let’s be real, I will consume almost anything horror-adjacent), the vibe was completely different from its big-sibling franchise. The movies feel slick, self-referential, and obsessed with genre rules. The show felt moodier, slower, and way more focused on teen drama and dark secrets than on deconstructing horror itself. Not bad — just different. And maybe that’s why it never quite felt like it was sitting at the same table.

Now, with Scream 7 coming out this Friday , I am eager to see what direction they take it in. I will be back with an update on Saturday evening so stay tuned….
